While work will begin shortly on upgrading the M1 from Mudgeeraba to Varsity Lakes, after an agreement was reached this month with the State Government, I am determined to keep up the fight to secure funding for the remainder of the M1 south to Tugun.
Last weekend I was joined by Urban Infrastructure Minister Paul Fletcher to look over the current plans, and he also spoke about the agreement in Federal Parliament this week.
Having secured this vital project, I will shortly be launching a public campaign to push for funding for the rest of the M1 from Varsity to Tugun. We all know this is crucial and I am determined to keep up the pressure. Funding for planning of this section was included in the agreement, but we need to ensure that this is made a priority. I will certainly be keeping up the fight.
This month I also brought together representatives from various Government Departments to talk directly with local residents at a public meeting, following the release of PFAS test results at Gold Coast Airport. While the initial results are promising, further testing is required. Local residents deserve to be thoroughly informed and I will continue to work with them to ensure their concerns are properly addressed.
It's been a busy Parliamentary month, with our Childcare reforms passing the Senate, the ACCC to investigate retail electricity prices, and Parliament passing the VET Ombudsman legislation. I was also pleased to advocate for our VET sector at Indonesia-Australia Business Week in Jakarta. International education is a key success story of our bilateral relationship, representing Australia’s largest services export to Indonesia, and was valued at $619 million last year.
I recently called for nominations for the 2017 McPherson Awards - if you know of a worthy local volunteer, please take the time to nominate them for special recognition.
Finally, on a light note, fish and chips on the beach are a huge part of our Gold Coast lifestyle. Now the call is out to find the best fish and chips in Australia - public voting is now open and I encourage you to vote for your favourite local takeaway.
I hope you've managed to stay safe and dry over the last few days. Our thoughts are with those affected and especially the clean up crews and emergency workers across the state who are dealing with the aftermath of Cyclone Debbie.
Until next month,
Karen Andrews MP - Federal Member for McPherson
