Ray Stevens MP – June Newsletter 2018
A warm welcome to our beautiful winter weather and also a warm welcome to our southern visitors and those across ‘the ditch’ who likewise enjoy a winter break in the sun! This time of year is the beginning of the whale migration season so keep an eye out as those magnificent leviathans of the ocean cruise past. You may even be fortunate enough to spot a mother with her bub! For those who brave the early mornings I can share with you that the sunrises are truly magnificent right now!
Due to lack of planning future vision when it came to parking needs in the Varsity Lakes CBD demand currently far exceeds supply. Local Government has advised that the construction of an off street car park is cost prohibitive and to be considered viable would need to have commercial daily car parking rates apply. Parking restrictions in the surrounding local residential streets assist residents who live in the area. Now is the time for Gold Coast City Council to acquire land to address Varsity Lakes parking issues which will only exacerbate over the future. The Council approved the density framework and the mixed residential commercial mix, so addressing the serious parking shortfall is a must for all residents and business owners while there is land available. Doing nothing is not an option.
This week at Parliament we saw the State Governments 2018 Budget handed down by the Treasurer. Unfortunately it did not contain much in the way of positive new surprises for Varsity. Despite needing a long-term fix for park and ride at Varsity Railway Station, I am certain the short-term temporary arrangements currently in place will continue. This Labor government’s focus on Cross River Rail at South Brisbane helps no one but the Treasurer herself when the billions of dollars involved in the project are needed elsewhere.
I was however pleased to hear some good news - $2 million in funding has been allocated to Varsity College to refurbish the Senior Learning Centre building. Any improvement to educational facilities for our school students is always welcome.
Local Business Drawcard – Winterfest!
Varsity Lakes will host its fourth annual Winterfest in 2018 and it is a definite date claimer for the first Saturday in August! There is a fun community event for all ages and offers something for everyone from street festival all day with plenty of kids activities, music, fabulous food trucks and to ‘Symphony by the lake’ in the evening and the finale is a fireworks extravaganza to round the evening off. Local traders are keen to showcase their best and highlight why locals enjoy the Varsity Lakes locale. I certainly urge all operators and residents to get involved in this great event.
