Spring is well and truly with us and I was delighted to attend the always popular Elanora Spring Fair & Flower Show and also #BloomFest2017 last month.
These events highlight the real sense of community that we enjoy on the southern Gold Coast. I was also honoured to open the Burleigh Mens' Shed, to be guest speaker at Varsity Lakes Probus, and to offer my congratulations to Currumbin RSL on their 70th Birthday. They are shining examples of the many great local organisations that help foster wellbeing, engagement and community spirit.
Last month I also launched my McPherson Christmas Drawing Competition to encourage young budding local artists, and I met with the crew of the Westpac Lifesaver Helicopter Service which I am proud to support.
Nationally, we had the passing of historic new media laws, a better than forecast Budget bottom line, and with the many issues surrounding energy affordability and reliability, we launched the excellent EnergyMadeEasy.gov.au website as a practical way to help people save on their power bills.
And I took the opportunity in Canberra to once again meet with the Minister for Urban Infrastructure Paul Fletcher to further the case for funding the M1 upgrade all the way to Tugun.
Among a range of portfolio events, speeches and announcements, it was fascinating to meet with some of the support staff of the NRL and discuss how their VET qualifications contribute to the success of the league, especially in the lead up to the grand final on the weekend.
Until next month,
Karen Andrews MP
