I hope you are planning a relaxing Easter break after what I know has been an extremely busy start to the year for many people.
After years of anticipation and planning, we are about to experience all the excitement (and logistical challenges) of our great city hosting the Commonwealth Games. Congratulations to everyone who has worked so hard and thankyou to the many local residents who have volunteered their time to make these Games a memorable experience for competitors, visitors and locals. I'm looking forward to all the sporting action!
This month we saw the benefits of our Government's continued economic management reflected in the local unemployment rate dropping to just 4.5%; a new defence contract to strengthen our military and create local jobs; and greater export opportunities for local businesses with the New Trans-Pacific Partnership deal.
We continue to deliver better health outcomes with local bulk-billing rates rising, more funding support for unpaid carers, and funding for worthy local community projects like the new Child Health Clinic being opened by the Benevolent Fund Gold Coast, thanks to a $15,000 Stronger Communities grant.
In contrast, Labor has announced a new tax grab that is set to hit retirees and those planning for their retirement. Judging by the calls and emails I've received, there's a lot of concern locally about this unfair policy. The Institute of Public Affairs recently released a research paper on how the policy will impact on everyone with superannuation and why these changes will damage Australia. It's such a backward step that slugs people trying to get ahead - you can be assured I will fight it all the way.
Enjoy the long weekend and then the Games! Here's to plenty of "personal bests" for our local sportsmen and women who have trained so hard.
Until next month,
