Ray Stevens MP – VLCL March Newsletter 2020
Greetings all as the first quarter of 2020 is rapidly coming to a close. The big story on everyone’s lips is the world-wide health alert over the brand-new epidemic called coronavirus. Not only ruining the reputation of a great beer, it is hard to gauge at this point in time how much damage this virus will do to the well-being of Australia and the world’s population and importantly how much damage it will do to the economy of Australia.
Without going into the doom and desperation that our media have done about this previously unknown virus, I do believe that it will have a debilitating effect on our Gold Coast economy in the months ahead. The very fact that the Chinese are our largest source of international visitors and are prevented from coming at the moment means that there will be flow-on effects to our tourism and educational sectors. The good news from the virus is that more Australians will most likely stay at home rather than venture overseas risking contamination which should bolster domestic tourism numbers to the Gold Coast. As Confucius may have said before the arrival of coronavirus “May you live in interesting times”!
There are plenty of Claytons announcements from the Palaszczuk Labor Government about fixing the M1 for the future very similar to the procrastination they did with the Tugan bypass many years ago. Everyone knows we require another highway between Brisbane and the Gold Coast NOW and it is only the LNP that have given an ironclad guarantee to put an alternative highway in place as our number one priority should we become the Government at the next State election due on 31st October this year. For business, tourism and social interaction between Australia’s 3rd largest city and Australia’s 6th largest city it beggars belief that this Labor Government has done nothing about it. Unfortunately they are besotted about the South Brisbane Subway called Cross River Rail which they have committed $5,000 Million for in the Treasurers own electorate which is not really needed until 2029. $5 Billion would build a fantastic alternative M1 if they were really committed to the Gold Coast!
Council Elections 28th March
Best wishes to those seeking election to the Gold Coast City Council on March 28th. The democratic processes emphasized by the proliferation of smiling faces on corflutes throughout the electorate are testament to a wonderfully fair system where everyone gets their chance to stand for election for whatever reason and everyone gets their chance to voice their opinion through the ballot box. I look forward to working closely with the successful candidates.
